Sclerotherapy to Varicose Veins
This common problem affects a high proportion of the adult population of every country causing great morbidity and utilizing a great proportion of every country’s health budget.
It can affect up to 35% of the adult female population and up to 20% of the adult male population.
Varicose veins are caused by a genetic defect of the vein wall, weakening it, defect of valves within the veins, either superficial or deep veins contribute to the problem. Female hormones especially during pregnancy and prolonged standing are common contributing factors.
Phlebology is the new field of Medicine that deals with vein disease, sclerotherapy is part of this wide field. Spider veins are dilated venules in the dermis and can either be red or blue in colour.
In over 95% of patients, varicose and spider veins are present in varying degree. Thus sclerotherapy (micro-injection) is the only treatment that can clear all veins in the legs. Surgery or lately, heat catheter treatments (endovenous laser or radiofrequency closure -widely advertised at present) treats only part of the patient’s problem, patients then have to have sclerotherapy to complete the treatments if they want a good result.
In Sclerotherapy, a sclerosant is injected into veins of various sizes, the foam (solution mixed with air) or solution is titrated to the size and location of veins, compression is then applied with a vein treatment stocking. All veins eventually turn into fibrous tissue and disappear.
Important points to consider for patients are:
- Safety of the procedure.
- Effectiveness with minimal complications.
- Patient preference and satisfaction with results.
Ease of follow up treatments – recurrent nature of vein disease.
Good cosmetic result, no severe scarring to legs.
- Avoidance of hospitalisation, theatre procedures and general anaesthetic (GA).
No interruption to work or lifestyle.
Medical conditions and medications that excludes surgery or GA.
Ability to treat all veins simultaneously CEAP C2 to CEAP C6 vein disease.
THE INTERNATIONAL VIEW TODAY IS, THERE IS NO METHOD OF TREATMENT THAT IS RIGHT OR WRONG. ALL TREATMENTS ARE PALLIATIVE, NEW VEINS WILL APPEAR.
Patients thus have to weigh up what is suitable and right for them, taking into consideration the above factors, otherwise they may end up with very expensive treatments and discover that it was not right for them. The best thing is to research the various treatments, ask questions, seek second opinions, it may save you a lot of money and be happier with the final results. All varicose veins, no matter how severe or large the varicose veins can be treated by sclerotherapy.
